How Risky is Undiagnosed Sleep Apnea

Dr. Robert Garelick graduated in 1980 from New York University with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery Degree. He completed his residency at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in 1981. Over the last thirty six years Dr. Garelick has built an enormously successful dental practice based in Lindenhurst, NY. The practice has thrived, resting on a foundation of clinical excellence and a profound commitment to the care and overall wellbeing of patients. One of the hallmarks of Dr. Garelick’s career and practice has been his vision of dentistry and its expansive role in promoting a patients quality of life and general health. This career long vision and commitment provided the impetus for his growing focus on dental and sleep health.

If you’re suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, Robert B Garelick, DDS may be able to help you treat your symptoms. Dr. Garelick will evaluate your specific symptoms and then will select the most appropriate oral appliance to correct the airway obstruction and breathing conditions that will ultimately make breathing easier, helping you to finally get the night’s sleep you deserve. Dr. Robert Garelick offers a variety of Oral appliances to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. These appliances are FDA-cleared therapeutic devices that are durable, comfortable, discreet and highly effective. It is absolutely imperative to get the required treatment as the cumulative effect of symptoms could prove fatal.

Research suggests that there’s a fairly strong link between sleep apnea and increased risk of death. A study from the Yale Center for Sleep Medicine in 2005 found that “sleep apnea doubles the risk for the development of stroke and death, and severe sleep apnea more than triples the risk,” lead author H. Klar Yaggi, assistant professor of medicine at Yale, said in the study’s press release. There’s also evidence that sleep apnea can cause heart problems, as this Cleveland Clinic article details. In the article Reena Mehra, MD, director of Sleep Disorders Research in the Sleep Center of the Neurologic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, said “there is a very strong association between sleep apnea and cardiac arrhythmia,” adding that research shows that repeated episodes of “upper airway collapse in sleep apnea may trigger arrhythmia events.”

The total number of deaths related to sleep apnea is something difficult to determine, but thanks to research (American Academy of Sleep Medicine), we now know that this disorder can lead to the following complications:

•An increased risk of having a stroke
•Death due to heart disease
•Insulin resistance and glucose tolerance, leading to diabetes
•Gastric Reflux (also called GERD)
•Weight gain and inability to lose weight
•Increased risk of cancer
•Higher blood pressure
•Heart attack

Fatigue caused by sleep apnea can cause excessive daytime sleepiness, poor judgment, and slows reflexes and reaction times. Not surprisingly, these can be the cause of car accidents, work-related injuries, falls, medication mistakes, and more. Living with a chronic sleep disorder can also cause the chemical balance in your body to be unstable - and your hormones and blood sugar levels may fluctuate on a daily basis. This can cause anxiety and/or depression, which may lead to substance abuse or even thoughts of suicide. People, who live with heart disease, often live with a high level of chronic anxiety and/or pain. Neither of these is conducive to a good night's sleep. Since studies indicate that sleep deprivation itself contributes to the development of heart disease, this obviously worsens the situation.
